Practice your passions

It’s easy to forget. To forget or lose passion for your passions. I have lost passion for many things over the years. Sometimes it’s hard to remember what it feels like to feel unfettered joy from an activity, a hobby, or an environment. So, take some time to revisit and practice your passions.

We easily get caught up in our responsibilities, our commitments, our work days and or general ennui. All these are important, but it’s also important to feel joy and passion for things that are not required of us. For me those things are hard to feel and hard to recognize. My work brings me a lot of joy, but it’s just one part of the whole. So, I try my best to make time for the things outside of my work that bring me joy.

I find joy in and am passionate about challenging my body physically. So, I practice rock climbing any chance I get. Climbing gets me outside and brings me to some of the most beautiful places on earth. What’s better than that?

Aside from rock climbing, I used to have endless passion for snowboarding. Since living in California, snowboarding has become less of an important part of my life. It’s a bummer, but at the same time it’s just not a priority so I don’t feel too bad or sad about not riding as much as I used to.

Our passions change over our lives and that’s a good thing. I love snowboarding, and I was really good at it and it brought me so, so much joy. Now, I spend my time differently. I spend more time climbing, more time lifting weights, more time challenging myself in new ways.

I’ve also always had enormous passion for music and going to live shows. My preferred genres are punk and heavy metal and I’m super lucky to live in the Bay Area for music. So many of my favorite bands have played here and I’ve seen them all! Music has always been a hugely important part of my life. Every show I go to and band that I see keeps that passion alive for me.

The one and only, Judas Priest!

What are you passionate about? What brings you joy? If you’re like me and you’ve found yourself in life’s ruts from time to time, go back and remember the things that bring you joy. Revisit your passions and practice them. Practice them as much as you can. Life is too short to not feel passion and joy from our activities and hobbies.
